Killing to Eat

I have done everything in my power to try and raise a few steers on our property this year.  Nice, grass fed, organic, happy steers without antibiotics and all that jazz.  Fortunately, it hasn't worked out.

A huge part of me really doesn't want to eat meat at all.  I hate the idea of killing something so I can eat.  I don't want to kill a large sentient creature or a small sentient creature.  Not unless I really, really, need it.

But on the other hand, my family eats meat and lots of it.  So we should do our best to make sure that the animal had a good life before it got to our freezer.  And we should be willing to look it in the eye first.

Talk about conflicted!  And did I mention the price of good beef?  It seemed obvious that we should raise it ourselves since we have land and water.  But this year my pasture is in poor shape because of the drought.  We didn't start getting water on it before it was really too late.  What a disappointment/relief?
